What homeowners check before they ring an installer

Before the phone rings, you have already been shortlisted or binned. The exact checklist people run through on their phone at 9pm.

5 min read

By the time a homeowner calls you about a heat pump, a rewire or a bathroom, they have usually looked at three to five firms online. The call list gets made at night, on a phone, often from the couch. You are either on it or you are not, and the deciding happens before you know the job exists.

The 9pm checklist

In rough order, here is what people look for:

  • Does the website load fast and work on a phone
  • Do they actually do the thing I need, stated plainly
  • Are they registered: SEAI, F-Gas, RGI, Safe Electric, depending on the job
  • Photos of real work, not stock photos of smiling models
  • Google reviews, both the score and how recent they are
  • A price signal, even a starting-from figure
  • An easy next step: call button, WhatsApp, or a short form

Where firms lose the shortlist

The most common failures are basic. A site that takes eight seconds to load. Services buried in paragraphs. No mention of grant eligibility for heat pump work. A contact page with just an email address and no phone number.

None of these mean you are bad at the job. All of them get you skipped anyway.

The fix is boring and it works

State what you do in the first screen. Show your certs. Show your work. Show a price signal. Make the phone number tappable. That is most of the battle, and most of your competitors still have not done it.
